So I took the Plasma Cutter down to the barn and started cutting it with the 220 VAC hooked up rather than the 110VAC in the garage. Big difference. LOTs more cut power.

Much better. It eats 0.60 aluminum with ease  There is some buildup on the tip from splatter, so you do have to clean it periodically, but that is workable. I might try some welding anti-spatter gel to mitigate some of that.

Like any plasma cutter, you gotta hold the tip flat to the work. This one is somewhat more sensitive than the others I’ve used to tip angle. The plasma flame isn’t as long as I would like (and as the Miller unit my neighbor has) but that may just take some work with the settings.

Having said that, it cuts like a hot knife through butter. Go too fast and it can (and will!) remelt, but that is just a matter of technique.

So far, I am pretty happy. I used it for over 20 minutes at pretty much 100% duty cycle at nearly 100% of the power setting, and it had no issues with overheating or anything.

Gonna play a bit more and see how the settings changes affect the efficiency. Sadly, the manual is typical Chinglish with few real tips, so I gotta just experiment a bit.

Overall, I would recommend it. Good purchase

I am impressed. Very.

I have a bunch of metal stuff to cut up. Mostly aluminum. I could have just used a sawzall, but the aluminum tends to gum up the blades quickly and I’d go through a fair bunch of ’em even if I cleaned the aluminum out of ’em…., and so I thought I’d try a plasma cutter.

Now, my neighbor has a very nice unit that I have used at his shop, a Miller, that takes 220V and, while it is a very nice tool, is priced at about 3200 bucks. So I looked up the specs, and went shopping. Amazon has one that has very similar specs, had good reviews, is 110/220 for $299 plus a $50 “in-store coupon”…..so I tried one. This one has all the goodies: Self starting pilot arc, post arc airflow to cool the tip, etc. I hated to buy a chinese one, but $249 vs $3400 is a big jump…..And I can always send it back to Amazon if I ain’t happy….So I ordered it:

I gotta say I am impressed. I set it up in the shop by the house, where it is warm, and even on 110V it did a decent job (Don’t have the correct 220 outlets for it in that shop) Hooked up the bits, connected shop air, did a bit of adjustment and within a half hour was burning some scrap 0.060 “stainless…then some 0.090″ aluminum and some 1/8 steel.

Now, I was too lazy to go down to the big shop and get a welding helmet, and that arc isn’t too good on the eyes, so I stopped playing…..(’twas high winds and rain, and I just wasn’t motivated to go outside). I cut over 3 feet at one pass of the scrap aluminum on 110V and didn’t pop a 20 amp breaker….I’m not sure what it would do with 220VAC…The reviews say that 1/2” steel is no issue, but we will see….

So far, I am impressed. When I get down to the big shop I will have a go with thicker aluminum and some mild steel, but so far, I am impressed. I might just bring it over to my neighbors place and try it side by side with his…..the only issue I can see is that the stinger cord is only 8 (actually 10) feet instead of 20, and the ground cord is only 10 feet instead of 20….but for less than 1/10 the price I think I can move it more often. I gotta find a decent case to carry it in, but that shouldn’t be too hard.

Good for the kid. Were I his parents I’d not only have made sure he was able to speak, but that sanctions were taken against the people who tossed him out of school for words on a T-shirt.

His point about the pride flags and other propaganda is very telling. Why are some words ok, and others aren’t? Why is one “class” protected and another is not?

If I had children in that school, I would DEMAND that the school board make a statement explaining the actions that were taken that day and either repudiate those actions (and describe the appropriate punishment for the teachers/”adults” that pressured this kid, or define what, exactly, is acceptable and why. Make ’em stand on their words and actions.

I am gonna go out on a limb here and bet that these are spoiled kids without a father figure prominent on their life.

So I went to walk the beach the other day as I try to do every few weeks…clear the mind, good for the soul, that sort of thing…..

And I realized, having been away for about 6 weeks, that it isn’t the same beach, nor am I the same man who made footprints in the sand last time….

I can’t go back….

I mean, really, the water in Lake Michigan is in the same place, and the dunes are still there in the same place, but the details are different each time…..Trees that were washed up on the beach are either washed away or buried….sometimes the beach is a few feet wide, sometimes it is a hundred yards or more wide…(and once in while it isn’t there at all). It is ever changing, sculpted by the wind and waves, changing every moment…slowly, but inexorably.

Nor, of course, am I the same dude who last trod upon it. Each time I am a bit different, changing from day to day…. less proud or more arrogant, more humbled-more beaten down, angry or content….A bit richer or a bit poorer, more stressed or more calm…But it ain’t the same me that walked the sand last time….for time changes and sculpts each of us in the same manner as nature changes the landscape.

Such is the way of nature, ever changing,,, and the way of people too, as we are also a part of nature. And so we are to the people we interact with. Unless we are there every day, together experiencing that change, growing or fading, being a part of that change, then we simply lose a part that which once connected us to that lover, or that friend …..in that the changes that we fail to be a part of, to mesh with, to experience and be affected together.

A friend may become less of a friend over time spent apart, as we and they change separately…. experiences and attitudes may change one, or the other, or both. Some friendships are forever, but they too change as the people change.

But life goes on.

The quote is “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.” (Heraclitus). I realized the meaning, the intent of that quote last time I walked the beach. It saddened me.
