SO what’s the deal?

First we were told that we all needed a Real ID compliant ID card (or a passport or other ID’s) for security purposes.

Then they extended the deadline. Then again, then again. then they extended it another time.

Now we either need the correct ID or we can pay a $45 fine.

Is the Real ID requirement about security anymore? Or is it something else?

  1. I’ve been wondering about this since you posted it…

    It’s clearly not about the revenue, there’s not enough non-compliant ids left there amongst the flying public to generate a meaningful amount of money…
    Likewise, it can’t be a real security issue, otherwise they wouldn’t let them fly…

    My only guess is that the Real ID system is a defacto National/Federal ID, and yours is just labeled with whichever state you happen to come from.

  2. States like mine (MN) will give drivers licenses to anybody who shows up. Dubious ID at best.

    Originally about that kind of crap, now the program is expanding to address the expanding needs of the program.
