When the Italians were immigrating en masse, it was the same negative attitude that they were very different from the more northern Europeans.
The main problem now is that by policy we don’t insist on assimilation of American Values by these new immigrants to become Americans and instead have gone to diversity / multicultural model which is causing lots of problems – by design.
I’ve met plenty Americans of Mexican, Guatemalan, and Indian descent, and even first gen immigrants from same who are a credit to this country. They have become Americans or are on their way to do so. We need to get other immigrants to do the same and have that back in focus.
Your point is well made, however, those immigrants chose to come and make a life here, current immigrants are not, as you say assimilating. But the attitude is not the same, either, these current “immigrants’ all have terribly different values than the average Christian/Anglo ex-european immigrant of the past. They will never assimilate, not just because they are not forced to, but because they choose not to.
Back then it was, really, a one way trip for immigrants, today, not so much.
The current crop of Illegals from south of the border do not have the same values as we share. If you think they do, then you haven’t met them.
Assimilation is the main difference!
