What, exactly was the fighter jet gonna do?

So an American Airlines plane, Flight AA292, had a bomb threat posted via an email….

Prudently, they chose to divert.

But why, for chrissakes, do they send a fighter jet to “escort” the plane to the diversion airport?

What good is that plane gonna do? Are they gonna shoot the passenger plane down? Remotely disarm the (possible) bomb?

What, exactly, is the role of the fighter?

  1. Gotta get video in case it was a real bomb and blew up before it landed.

  2. It’s “security theatre”.for the benefit of the masses.

  3. There was a threat of the plane (bomb or no bomb) being used as weapon itself.
Jet was to shoot it down if it diverted or appeared to taken over.

    • What are you gonna do? Shoot it down over Rome?

You need to think about what you wrote.
BTW, the threat was a BOMB threat. Via Email. The Flight Deck was secure
      Facts matter.
