For the young readers, the old VW Beetle:
A.) The engine was in the rear
B.) Was air-cooled and therefore did not have a radiator
That was the stink from my feet, which sat right behind the front bumper. Of course, my legs were also underneath the fuel tank!!!! The kid was in the back seat bouncing up and down to short out the battery that was under it.
VW: The Very Worst place to be in an accident!
I had a ’66 Beetle that was pretty tough. I lost my brakes and rear ended a large commercial van hard enough to hook the front bumper bosses underneath it’s bumper. Took 4 cops of push down enough to free them.
Driver’s supervisor showed up and I took complete blame for the accident. He appreciated that enough to refuse pressing charges. Demonstrating the brakes were gone, the ticket was minor. 1980 was the year and they were referred as ‘Peace Officers’ back then.
Damage to both vehicles – virtually none..
