Many of my ancestors came from Germany over 100 yrs ago. They settled in central Iowa. Enough people came over that there was a German Newspaper for about 25 years. Why not after that???
All adults and children were encouraged to learn English as quickly as possible. Some ( especially the older people) continued to speak mainly German but as the population grew older there wasn’t enough demand to keep the newspaper going.
Yes, in many communities they still have an Octoberfest celebration ( They do in a lot of NON-German communities too). However, they all became first and foremost AMERICANS. When ( as a child) I visited Great-Aunts and Great-Uncles etc I never saw any German flags. Sometimes ( rarely ) they talked about older family members they remembered and some ” old ways”. However, they were all American first !
My In-Laws were mainly Norwegian.( They had been in the US only for 50 yrs or so at that time. Some of the older generation had an accent. Yet other than some traditional meals around Christmas, they focused only on America.
Ideas from other countries CAN be helpful ! Yet the first goal should be to speak English ( First and not press 1 to hear…). They need to conform to and be part of America ! People from India and Oriental countries mostly ” melt ” into our country. It shows !! Their kids get the best grades in school, their young adults become our next generation of Doctors etc. You can still succeed in this country if you work hard. As a legal citizen.
