The Iron Ore Freighter Edmund Fitzgerald sank in a storm on this day in 1975. 50 years ago,
Gone from the surface literally between sweeps of the radar of the ship ahead of it, (the Arthur Anderson). She sank with all hands. 29 men lost their lives in that storm.
A P-3 Orion from the US Navy found 2 magnetic signatures in about 500 feet of water on Nov. 14 1975, and and in May of 1976 unmanned submersibles found both halves of the ship. She hand broken nearly perfectly in half.
If you haven’t heard Gordon Lightfoot’s ballad, “The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald” then you must have been hiding under a rock. The story isn’t strong on details, but it is a hell of a ballad.
That song is a very haunting tale. They don’t write songs like that any more !!
