On this date, back in 1945, the United states detonated the second ever Atomic Bomb…over Hiroshima, Japan.
Despite the firebombings killing many Japanese people over the preceding months, the allied bombings had not broken the will of the Japanese to make war….
and, of course, the US has spent all that money on the Manhattan Project….
But, either way, on Aug 6th, 1945 the Enola Gay, piloted by Col. Paul Tibbetts, dropped the uranium bomb at 8:15 Am local time.
The bomb detonated approximately 44 seconds later, killing approximately 110,000 people.
Welcome to the atomic age.
The War Department had millions of Purple Heart medals coined as preparation for the expected losses on our side if we invaded the Home Islands. In the 80 years since we still haven’t depleted that stockpile.
Then there would be the carnage on the Japanese side as women and children defended against the invaders with bamboo spears and the like, all because Japanese media portrayed American soldiers as monsters who raped and slaughtered without mercy… Ironic statements by the perpetrators of the Rape of Nanking and other atrocities in China.
Truman made the right call all around.

My grandfather ,a navy man, went through combat training and was skated to be part of the invasion. He said Truman saved his life
