I’ve gone to many vehicle accidents with the FD over the decades, and I always feel bad when someone badly fails a field sobriety test (FST) and gets slapped in cuffs. Especially when they have been given multiple chances to get in the ambulance instead. We had one of these just last week. The guy was lucky his truck stopped when it did, or he would have turned his truck into a submarine. The drivers are still in deep doo-doo, but they aren’t going to jail and they’ll have a simple blood alcohol test in the ER, then get booked later.
I was called out to investigate a one car accident many years ago in a different department. When I arrived on scene, a wrecker was trying to remove the rolled over vehicle and scoot with the driver. State police but the kibosh on that action. Because of the location of the accident, it was unsafe for state police to administer the FST at the scene. So, I had to accompany them all to my firehouse. The lone vehicle occupant was a childhood friend that was severely inebriated. I felt so bad for him as he failed the FST miserably. He could barely stand never mind do the required actions. I remember from just after high school hearing he had problems with alcohol abuse and here we were. As he was lead away in cuffs I said see ya and good luck. I have no idea whatever happened to him.
Well, I looked up that childhood friend, Charlie Francis. Turns out he died in 2023 at age 60. Reading his obituary and seeing the life he lead, I’m surprised he lived that long.
