Bleg:

I have a friend who is in need of a Life-Alert type device…..he is elderly and lives alone and has fallen several times.

There are a LOT of devices and services out there, but they range in price over a wide range, for the devices and for the service. Reviews of all of them are all over the place with people both ecstatically happy and disappointed for the same device or service.

Has any one reading this ever used such a device or service, either for themselves or their older loved ones? Can you suggest (or steer me away from) any particular device/service?

Please, if you can help, respond in comments.

Thanks

B

  1. I’m actually curious as to why these devices are still needed with the utter proliferation of cell phones. I guess if you’re worried that you’ll only be able to push one button before going unconscious, one of these would make sense. Otherwise, even an inactive cell phone will allow you to dial 911.

    • these devices are smaller and can be worn as a watch or a necklace.

When Bill fell the first time, he did not have his cell phone on him, and laid there for three days before I found him.

  2. My 90 year old mother used Life Alert. Was about $30 per month, if I remember right. Was completely satisfied with them.

  3. I don’t have a recommendation. Seems a lot of them are ‘locally’ dependant on call centers for response times/notification to LEO/Medics

  4. Have two friends that are/were users of Life Alert. One used her quite frequently as she had a pattern of falling and not being able to get up. Response was immediate and son notified an L.A. was there in less than 15 minutes but she is now in Nursing Home. Other didn’t have it when needed but now wears one and seems pleased.

  5. My mother was getting an Apple watch for this. It would give her some other health info as well and she was already deep in the Apple system. She passed from something unrelated before the watch showed up though so no info on how it performed.
