Aesop points out that it was 80 years ago today that they broke out of Stalag Luft III in 1944

They never gave up trying. They didn’t really succeed in getting away, but they did break out of the camp. It cost 50 of ’em their lives.

Apparently the movie was fairly accurate, if not entirely so.

Hats off to them, wherever their souls might be.
